Cruises to Comino and the Blue Lagoon: the five boats compared

You get to Comino by boat or not at all. From Malta there are five options on Civitatis, from €36 to €89, and they differ in three things: which harbour they leave from, how long you get at the lagoon and whether lunch is included. None includes the lagoon pass.

1. Comino & Blue Lagoon cruise (€40): what almost everyone does

Leaves Buġibba harbour, crosses in 90 minutes and anchors at Comino for the day: the lagoon, the coral reef a few metres away for snorkelling (kit €5 extra) and the film sets of Troy and The Count of Monte Cristo. From June to October, weather permitting, an extra hour at the Crystal Lagoon. Six hours in all. Two warnings from the listing itself: the 9:30 departure does not take under-12s (for them, the 9:00), and “in high season we recommend an early departure, before the sites get crowded”. The order of stops may change with the weather.

2. Gozo & Comino cruise (€45): an hour at the lagoon, three on Gozo

The version for seeing both islands in a day: one hour on Comino (Blue Lagoon), then three free hours on Gozo with a transfer to Victoria (€5 per person, extra), and on the way back the Santa Marija pirate caves and the Elephant’s Head from the boat. Six hours from Buġibba. Listing warning: “boats departing from 1 April to 25 October have no underwater viewing windows and are not wheelchair accessible”.

3. Hop-on ferry Gozo + Comino (€36): you decide the split

Not a cruise but a ferry ticket with an open return: leaves Sliema at 10:00 or Buġibba at 10:40, calls at Mgarr harbour (Gozo) and Comino, and you choose: two hours on Gozo and two on Comino, the other way round, or five on one. Several ferries back in the afternoon: from Sliema the return is scheduled at 17:05 or 18:10 (18 April to 1 October; 17:40 the rest of the year) and from Buġibba at 19:30 (17:00 in winter). The most flexible and the cheapest, with a modest rating (7.2).

4. Schooner with hotel pickup (€75): lunch aboard and 90 minutes at the lagoon

Pickup at Malta’s main hotels and departure from Sliema on the schooner Fernandes: 90 minutes anchored at Gozo, 90 minutes at the Blue Lagoon, buffet lunch aboard with drinks and fruit on the way back. Seven and a half hours. Two important warnings from the listing: “visiting the Blue Lagoon is not guaranteed: on days with heavy visitor numbers this area closes”, and in bad weather the Gozo stop is replaced by the Mellieha area. One review: “we were a bit cramped... fewer people aboard would be better”.

5. Catamaran with buffet and open bar (€89)

From Sliema harbour at 10:30, seven hours: a snack during the crossing, a buffet of salads, cold cuts, cheeses and fruit at Comino and an open bar of beer, wine and soft drinks all day, with a stop at the Blue Lagoon. The dearest and the one with the fewest reviews (16, rated 8.1). No hotel pickup.

Which to choose

If what you want is the lagoon, the €40 cruise from Buġibba first thing: it gives you the most time on Comino and is the best rated. If you want Gozo too, the €45 one or the hop-on ferry. If you would rather not organise lunch or transport, the schooner, accepting the lagoon may drop out. And in every case, the pass booked for the slot in which the boat puts you ashore.

Details read on the operators’ Civitatis listings on 6 September 2026. The valid price and itinerary are always those in the booking process. The Gozo and Comino catamaran-plus-minibus excursion (€45, 8 hours) is left out of the comparison because of its rating (6.4).
